Business need

A mature, high-value simulation product used to model mechanical, thermo-mechanical and fluid dynamics systems needed to evolve from a monolithic architecture to microservices on AWS. Objectives: lower total cost for end users and enable complex simulations even without a high-end workstation.

Approach

Rather than hiring new teams, Siemens opted for rapid re-skilling of existing engineers. Veteran C++ experts with unmatched product knowledge joined our instructor-led Cloud Academies focused on cloud fundamentals, microservices design, DevOps & IaC, observability and cost-aware delivery — all delivered hands-on. Over two years, distributed cohorts from Romania, France, Belgium and the USA progressed through weekly live blocks and guided labs.

• Teams now design and operate on AWS, addressing both advanced C++ and cloud architecture.

Context

Starting in 2018 and continuing for five years, Marelli ran specialized Automotive Academies to rapidly grow new teams in Cluj-Napoca — a city with few engineers experienced in Automotive software at the time. Each cohort ran for two and a half months and combined deep theory with intensive practice.

Curriculum highlights

• Embedded C and advanced C++; Operating Systems, RTOS and real-time programming (on QNX and real boards).
• AUTOSAR; Software Architecture & Design (implementation in Enterprise Architect by Sparx Systems).
• Python; CANoe and other Vector tools; IoT; embedded programming techniques.
• Serial and Automotive protocols: CAN, FlexRay, LIN, etc.; code for an Instrument Cluster and on the Edocti vehicle.

Impact

The Academies produced cohorts of professionals highly valued within Marelli and later across the local ecosystem. In practical terms, Edocti helped seed and grow an Automotive software community in Cluj-Napoca. Beyond skills, the program forged lasting professional relationships — alumni still reconnect and fondly recall the learning experience.
